URGENT – We’ve just heard that the state government wants to take away the current protection of all regional unused railway lines in NSW to allow for bike trails instead. Please call Labor and Liberal Regional Transport Minsters to protest the removal of future rail reinstatement of thousands of kms of railway line.
Regional areas constantly see the loss of public services and it’s unjust and unfair.
Siri Gamage – Power to Close Regional Rail Lines to Construct Rail Trails(Bike and walking tracks):
Currently this power rests with the NSW Parliament. It is necessary to pass an amendment to the NSW Transport Administration Act to close a regional rail line. TFNSW is seeking government approval to TRANSFER this power to the relevant minister for future regional rail line closures to make things easy.
Purpose of amendment: “A one off amendment to the Transport Administration Act that allows Minister to remove track with or without closing the line – equivalent with Greater Metropolitan Region”.
This will be not a good step in terms of “public interest”. We need the NSW parliament to retain its oversight power in relation to future closures of regional rail lines for any infrastructure projects not related to train services.
